The Monastery

Oral tradition notes the founding of a monastery in Frigolet around the year 967 by monks from Montmajour Abbey.

The first written document that mentions the monastery at Frigolet dates from 1133 and mentions a priory of 12 friars, probably a community of canons regular. This community built the Romanesque structures on the domain, including the cloister, Saint-Michel church and Our Lady chapel.

The cloister may appear massive and severe at first glace, but its gracious proportions and the warm colour of the stone give it a unique beauty.

A cloister, from the Latin claustrum meaning "closed area", is traditionally a covered walkway built around a central courtyard and connects the various rooms of the monastery and Frioglet's cloister is no exception. It also plays a spiritual role as a place of silence, peace and contemplation.
